Virginia Woolf dijo de Middlemarch de George Eliot (Mary Anne Evans) lo siguiente:
"the magnificent book that, with all its imperfections, is one of the few English novels written for grown-up people".
(el magnífico libro que, con todas sus imperfecciones, es una de las pocas novelas inglesas escritas para gente adulta)

Morrissey y Marr, en su canción How soon is now? (1984, The Smiths), escribieron estos versos a partir de una frase de George Eliot en Middlemarch:

I am the son
and the heir
of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
of nothing in particular

(soy el hijo
y el heredero
de una timidez que es criminalmente vulgar
soy el hijo y el heredero
de nada en particular)

la frase de Eliot es:
"To be born the son of a Middlemarch manufacturer, and inevitable heir to nothing in particular".
(haber nacido hijo de un obrero de Middlemarch, e inevitable heredero de nada en particular)

no conocía la conexión hace dos años, cuando leí Middlemarch y escuché casi a diario a los Smiths y a Morrissey.
